A forklift brake booster operates on a simple principle: the booster housing is divided into two chambers by a flexible rubber diaphragm. With the engine running, intake manifold vacuum is applied to both sides of the diaphragm through a one-way check valve, keeping the diaphragm centered. When the operator presses the brake pedal, a control valve opens that admits atmospheric pressure to the rear chamber while the front chamber remains under vacuum. The pressure differential across the diaphragm — typically 0.7 to 0.8 bar — creates a force that pushes on the master cylinder piston, multiplying the pedal force. The amount of boost is proportional to how far the pedal is pressed. When the engine stalls, the one-way check valve traps vacuum in the booster, providing enough reserve for one to two power-assisted brake applications before the pedal becomes hard.
