The 3EA-15-11173 friction plate is a wet-type transmission clutch friction disc — the component that carries the friction material lining and engages the clutch drum splines inside Komatsu FD20, FD25, and FD30 hydraulic powershift transmissions. In a wet clutch pack, multiple friction plates alternate with steel separator plates; when the transmission control valve directs charge pressure to the clutch piston, the plates are compressed together, and the friction material grips the steel separator surfaces to transmit torque. A friction plate with worn, glazed, or heat-damaged friction material slips under load, generating heat that degrades the transmission oil, warps the steel separator plates, and eventually burns the entire clutch pack.
