A failing water pump on a 490-series engine produces progressive symptoms: first, a small coolant drip from the weep hole at the bottom of the pump housing indicates the internal shaft seal has worn and is allowing coolant past the seal — this drip will increase over time and eventually become a steady stream. Simultaneously or shortly after, a grinding or rumbling noise from the water pump area indicates bearing wear — the pump shaft bearing supports the pulley that the fan belt drives, and a worn bearing allows the shaft to wobble, which accelerates seal failure and can cause the fan belt to be thrown off if the pulley misalignment becomes severe.
