STEERING COLUMN FUNCTION: The steering column houses the steering shaft that rotates inside a tubular housing. The upper end connects to the steering wheel via a spline or taper; the lower end connects to the steering orbitrol input shaft via the 18-tooth spline coupling. When the operator turns the steering wheel, the shaft rotates and drives the orbitrol, which meters hydraulic oil to the steering cylinder. The steering column also provides the structural mount for the steering wheel, horn button, turn signal assembly, and in some models the ignition switch. INSTALLATION: Remove the steering wheel using a puller. Disconnect the turn signal and horn wiring. Unbolt the steering column from the dashboard mounting bracket. Disconnect the lower end from the orbitrol input shaft. Extract the column. Install the new column, connecting the 18-tooth spline to the orbitrol. Bolt the column to the dashboard bracket. Reconnect wiring. Install the steering wheel and torque the retaining nut. Verify steering wheel centering and free rotation without binding.
