The transmission control valve is the hydraulic brain of the automatic transmission — it directs pressurized transmission fluid to the correct clutch packs and brake bands based on the gear selector position, throttle position, and vehicle speed. INSTALLATION PROCEDURE: Step 1 — Drain the transmission fluid. Step 2 — Remove the transmission oil pan to access the valve body. Step 3 — Disconnect the electrical connectors and shift linkage from the valve body. Step 4 — Remove the valve body mounting bolts — note that valve body bolts are different lengths and MUST be reinstalled in the exact same positions. Step 5 — Carefully lower the old valve body — be aware that check balls and springs may fall out. Note the position of each check ball and spring for correct reassembly. Step 6 — Clean the transmission case mounting surface thoroughly with solvent. Step 7 — Install the new valve body with a new gasket or separator plate. Install check balls and springs in the correct positions. Step 8 — Torque valve body bolts to specification in the correct sequence. Step 9 — Reconnect electrical connectors and shift linkage. Step 10 — Install a new transmission oil pan gasket and reinstall the pan. Step 11 — Refill with the correct specification transmission fluid. Step 12 — Start the engine and cycle through all gear positions several times. Check fluid level with the transmission at operating temperature.
