The splined hub is machined from alloy steel with involute spline profiles that provide zero-backlash engagement with the transmission input shaft while allowing smooth axial movement for clutch disengagement. Integral to the hub is a torsional damper assembly — a set of calibrated coil springs arranged in windows within the hub flange — that absorbs the cyclic torque pulsations inherent to diesel engine firing impulses and cushions the shock loads generated during abrupt clutch engagement. This damper significantly reduces gear rattle at idle, extends transmission synchronizer life, and protects the differential and axle shafts from fatigue stress accumulation over thousands of operating hours.
