This is the release fork — also called shift fork or gear selector fork — for forklift manual transmissions. The release fork is the metal component inside the gearbox that slides the synchronizer sleeve along the transmission output shaft to engage and disengage gears. When the driver moves the shift lever, the shift linkage moves the selector rail, which pushes or pulls the shift fork — the fork’s two prongs engage a groove in the synchronizer sleeve, sliding the sleeve toward the selected gear. The fork must slide freely on the selector rail (no binding or sticking) while maintaining precise alignment with the synchronizer sleeve groove — a bent or worn fork creates misalignment that prevents full gear engagement, causing the transmission to pop out of gear under load. The fork tips (the prongs that contact the synchronizer sleeve) wear over time from sliding friction against the rotating sleeve — when the tips are worn thin, the fork develops excess clearance in the sleeve groove, which creates slop in the shift linkage. The driver feels this as a loose, imprecise shift lever — the lever moves but the gear engagement point is vague. A severely worn fork can break at the prong roots during a hard shift, leaving the transmission stuck in whatever gear it was in when the fork broke — the forklift becomes immobile until the transmission is disassembled to extract the broken fork and replace it.
