HELI Steering Cylinder for 3-7 Ton Forklift
The HELI steering cylinder is a double-acting hydraulic cylinder that converts hydraulic pressure from the steering orbitrol into left and right wheel movement on HELI 3-7 ton forklifts. Unlike tilt cylinders that control mast angle, the steering cylinder is mounted horizontally across the rear axle and connects to the steering knuckles via tie rods — when the operator turns the steering wheel, the orbitrol meters oil to one side of the steering cylinder piston while releasing oil from the other side, pushing or pulling the tie rods to steer the wheels. A HELI steering cylinder with worn internal piston seals causes steering wheel free play at highway speeds in the warehouse, requiring the operator to turn the wheel further before the wheels respond, and producing wandering or lane drift during travel.
Built to HELI OEM specification for 3-7T CPCD series forklifts, this HELI steering cylinder features a honed steel cylinder bore, a hard-chrome plated piston rod with double-acting polyurethane lip seals on both the piston and rod gland, and a rod wiper to prevent dust and debris ingress. The mounting configuration uses trunnion or clevis mounts matched to the HELI rear axle steering linkage. A bent piston rod on a steering cylinder causes binding at certain steering angles and uneven rod seal wear that leads to external oil leaks. Each HELI steering cylinder ships with ports plugged and rod protected. After installation, bleed the steering circuit by turning the steering wheel lock-to-lock several times at low engine speed until steering effort is consistent and the wheel returns smoothly to center. Check the tie rod ends for wear and replace if necessary — a new steering cylinder connected to worn tie rod ends will not restore precise steering.
