Before installing a replacement cylinder, check the steering linkage ball joints for wear — worn ball joints allow the cylinder rod to articulate beyond its designed angular range, side-loading the rod bearing and causing accelerated seal and bearing wear. The cylinder mounting bolts must be torqued to 60-70 N·m and secured with thread-locking compound — loose mounting bolts allow the cylinder body to shift during steering, creating a “dead zone” in the steering where wheel movement lags behind steering wheel rotation. After installation, bleed the cylinder by cycling the steering lock-to-lock 5-6 times with the engine running — continue until no air bubbles are visible in the hydraulic tank sight glass. Common failure symptoms: external oil leak from the rod seal (visible oil on the cylinder rod and steering axle), steering wheel requires 30-40% more effort to turn in one direction than the other (internal piston seal bypass in one direction), and steering wheel “hunts” or oscillates at highway speed (worn piston seal allowing pressure feedback).
