Forklift Power Steering Cylinder — Hydraulic Steering Assist for 1-5 Ton Forklifts

This power steering cylinder is a double-acting hydraulic cylinder that provides steering assist in full-hydraulic steering systems on 1-5 ton forklifts. Mounted on the steering axle between the steering knuckles, this cylinder converts hydraulic pressure from the orbitrol steering unit into mechanical force that turns the steered wheels. The cylinder has a bore diameter of 40-50mm and a rod diameter of 25-30mm with an operating pressure of 100-130 bar — producing approximately 12-15 kN of steering force, sufficient to turn fully-loaded steer tires even when the forklift is stationary on high-friction surfaces such as concrete with rubber tire contact. The cylinder uses a chrome-plated rod with a surface hardness of HRC 55-60 and a surface finish of Ra 0.2 microns — this mirror-smooth rod surface is critical for seal life because any surface roughness or pitting will cut the rod seal lip, causing external oil leakage that progressively worsens until the steering becomes sluggish due to internal bypass past the piston seal.

Power steering cylinder failure is most commonly caused by rod damage from external impact (forklift collision or debris striking the exposed rod) or by contaminated hydraulic oil causing internal piston seal wear. A bent rod of even 0.5mm runout over the rod length will cause the rod seal to wear in an oval pattern, creating a leak path within the first 200 hours of operation. Before installing a replacement cylinder, check the steering linkage ball joints for wear — worn ball joints allow the cylinder rod to articulate beyond its designed angular range, side-loading the rod bearing and causing accelerated seal and bearing wear. The cylinder mounting bolts must be torqued to 60-70 N·m and secured with thread-locking compound — loose mounting bolts allow the cylinder body to shift during steering, creating a “dead zone” in the steering where wheel movement lags behind steering wheel rotation. After installation, bleed the cylinder by cycling the steering lock-to-lock 5-6 times with the engine running — continue until no air bubbles are visible in the hydraulic tank sight glass. Common failure symptoms: external oil leak from the rod seal (visible oil on the cylinder rod and steering axle), steering wheel requires 30-40% more effort to turn in one direction than the other (internal piston seal bypass in one direction), and steering wheel “hunts” or oscillates at highway speed (worn piston seal allowing pressure feedback).

This cylinder fits 1-5 ton forklifts with full-hydraulic steering including Heli, Hangcha, TCM, and Komatsu models. Measure your existing cylinder rod diameter, bore diameter, and retracted length (center-to-center of mounting eyes) before ordering — these three dimensions are the definitive fitment reference.
