The brake sub-pump is the hydraulic slave cylinder at each wheel that converts pressurized brake fluid from the master cylinder into the mechanical force that expands the brake shoes outward against the rotating brake drum. When the operator applies the brake pedal, the master cylinder generates hydraulic pressure that travels through the brake lines to each wheel cylinder. The fluid pressure forces the wheel cylinder piston outward, pushing the brake shoes into contact with the drum to generate frictional stopping force. The term “sub-pump” distinguishes the wheel cylinder from the master cylinder — the master cylinder is the primary hydraulic pump at the brake pedal, while the sub-pump cylinders are the actuators at each wheel. Installing the brake sub-pump wheel cylinder on a 3 ton forklift requires removing the wheel, removing the brake drum from the hub, disconnecting the brake hydraulic line from the cylinder, unbolting the old cylinder from the backing plate, cleaning the mounting surface of corrosion and brake debris, installing the new Kingstream OEM cylinder with fresh sealing washers on the hydraulic connection, reconnecting the brake line, reinstalling the drum, and bleeding the brake hydraulic system to remove trapped air. The bleeder valve must face upward during installation — an incorrectly oriented cylinder prevents proper bleeding. After installation, refill the master cylinder reservoir with DOT 3 or DOT 4 brake fluid, bleed the system starting from the wheel farthest from the master cylinder, and verify firm pedal feel with no fluid leaks at the cylinder hydraulic connection or dust boots.
