The wheel cylinder is the hydraulic actuator at each wheel that converts pressurized brake fluid from the master cylinder into the mechanical force that expands the brake shoes against the brake drum. When the operator applies the brake pedal, the master cylinder pressurizes brake fluid through the hydraulic lines to each wheel cylinder. The fluid pressure drives the wheel cylinder piston outward, forcing the brake shoes to contact the rotating drum inner surface — generating friction that converts kinetic energy into heat and decelerates the forklift. Installing the brake wheel cylinder requires removing the wheel and brake drum, disconnecting the brake hydraulic line from the cylinder, unbolting the old cylinder from the backing plate, cleaning the mounting surface, installing the new cylinder with new sealing washers, reconnecting the hydraulic line, reinstalling the drum, and bleeding the brake system. The bleeder valve must face upward during installation to allow air to escape when bleeding. After bleeding, verify firm pedal feel and no fluid leaks. A leaking wheel cylinder contaminates the brake shoes with brake fluid — fluid-soaked shoes lose friction effectiveness and must be replaced.
