Suction strainer maintenance is the most neglected item in forklift hydraulic systems because the strainer is inside the tank and not visible without draining the oil. A restricted suction strainer is the silent killer of hydraulic pumps — it does not trigger any warning light or gauge until the pump has already sustained cavitation damage. The strainer should be removed and cleaned during every hydraulic oil change (1,000 hours for standard operation, 500 hours in dusty environments). To access the strainer, drain the tank completely and remove the suction pipe flange. Clean the mesh with solvent and compressed air blown from the inside outward. If the mesh shows any dark varnish-like coating, this is oxidized oil residue that has baked onto the mesh from localized heating at restricted flow areas — the strainer has been running restricted and should be replaced rather than cleaned. Common failure symptoms: hydraulic pump making a loud “hammering” noise at full RPM (severe cavitation from completely clogged strainer), all hydraulic functions noticeably slower in the first 10 minutes of cold-start operation (cold oil viscosity compounding the restriction), and the pump case temperature exceeding 80°C within 15 minutes of operation (cavitation-generated heat).
