UNIVERSAL JOINT FUNCTION: The universal joint uses a cross-shaped spider with four bearing caps to connect two yokes at an angle. Each yoke attaches to one shaft end; the spider allows the two shafts to rotate together while accommodating angular misalignment between them. On forklifts, universal joints are used in two locations: the steering column shaft connecting the steering wheel to the orbitrol, and the drive shaft connecting the transmission to the drive axle. INSTALLATION: Support the forklift on jack stands. Remove the drive shaft by unbolting the universal joint from the transmission output flange and the drive axle input flange. Press or hammer out the old universal joint spider from the yokes. Install the new universal joint by pressing the bearing caps into the yoke bores. Reinstall the drive shaft assembly.
