The 31515-40K00 is a hydraulically-actuated clutch piston for the Nissan J02 series automatic transmission used in Nissan FJ02-FJ05 forklifts. In an automatic transmission, the clutch piston is the component that converts hydraulic fluid pressure into mechanical clamping force — when the transmission control valve directs pressurized ATF into the piston chamber, the piston moves axially against a return spring pack, compressing the clutch friction and steel plates together to engage a specific gear set. The seal must be oriented with the lip facing the pressure side of the piston. Common failure symptoms: transmission slipping in one direction only (forward or reverse — the corresponding clutch piston not building pressure), delayed engagement of 2-3 seconds after selecting direction (piston lip seal bypass), and ATF appearing dark with a burnt smell (clutch pack slipping from insufficient piston clamping force).
