Installing carbon brushes on an electric forklift motor requires removing the motor access cover, retracting the brush springs, extracting the worn brushes from the brush holders, cleaning accumulated carbon dust from the holders and commutator surface with compressed air, inserting the new J201 brushes into the holders, and releasing the springs to press the brushes against the commutator. The new brushes must move freely in the holders without binding — a stuck brush creates an open circuit, causing arcing at the remaining brushes and reduced motor power. After installation, the brushes must be bedded to the commutator by running the motor at low load for the first 2-4 operating hours to allow the brush face to conform to the commutator curvature.
