The carbon brush transfers electrical current between the stationary wiring and the rotating commutator of the traction or hydraulic pump motor — as the brush wears down from friction against the commutator at thousands of RPM, it must be replaced before the wear limit is reached to prevent the copper braided shunt wire from contacting and scoring the commutator surface. Installing carbon brushes on a Liaoyuan XQ.3-CPD electric forklift motor requires accessing the motor brush assembly, retracting the brush springs, extracting the worn brushes from the holders, cleaning accumulated conductive carbon dust from the brush holders and commutator surface with compressed air, inserting the new brushes into the holders, and releasing the springs to press the brushes firmly against the commutator. The brushes must slide freely without binding in the holders — a stuck brush creates an open circuit, causing arcing at the remaining brushes and reduced motor power output. After installation, the new brushes must be bedded to the commutator by running the motor at low load for the first 2-4 operating hours to allow the brush face material to conform to the commutator curvature.
