When replacing a connecting rod, always replace the rod bolts with new OEM-spec fasteners — used torque-to-yield bolts have already been stretched beyond their elastic limit during the first installation and will not maintain the correct clamping force if reused. The big-end bore must be measured for roundness at multiple angles (0°, 45°, 90°, 135°) — an out-of-round bore crushes the bearing shell and reduces oil clearance on one axis, causing a spun bearing within the first operating hours. The small-end bushing must be checked for correct press-fit and piston pin clearance. All connecting rods in a multi-cylinder engine must be weight-matched — installing one rod that differs by more than 2-3 grams creates engine imbalance that shortens main bearing life. Apply assembly lube to the bearing shells and crankshaft journal before torque, and prime the oil system by cranking without fuel until oil pressure registers on the gauge before first start.
