The hydraulic transmission is the heart of a powershift forklift — it replaces the manual clutch and gearbox with a torque converter and hydraulically-actuated clutch packs that shift under load without the operator touching a clutch pedal. When a torque converter fails, the forklift loses push force and acceleration. When a control valve sticks, shifts become harsh and unpredictable. When a clutch pack burns, that gear is lost entirely. Hydraulic transmission parts operate under 200-300 PSI of transmission fluid pressure with internal clearances measured in thousandths of an inch — contamination, low fluid, or overheating destroys them quickly and expensively.
Kingstream supplies replacement hydraulic transmission components for Toyota, Komatsu, HELI, CAT, Mitsubishi, and Doosan powershift forklifts. Every component is manufactured to OEM pressure and flow specifications. Every torque converter is balanced to OEM tolerance. Every valve body is tested for shift quality on a hydraulic test bench.
Complete Hydraulic Transmission Parts Catalog:
Forklift Torque Converter — The fluid coupling that replaces the mechanical clutch in a powershift transmission. The torque converter uses transmission fluid driven by an impeller (pump) to spin a turbine connected to the transmission input shaft, multiplying engine torque by up to 2.5:1 during acceleration. A failing torque converter causes: loss of push force (forklift won’t climb ramps that it used to), overheating transmission fluid (burnt smell, dark color), and shuddering during takeoff. Internally, the stator one-way clutch (sprag) may be slipping, or the lockup clutch may be worn (on lockup-equipped converters). We stock rebuilt and new torque converters with correct stall speed and bolt pattern for Toyota, Komatsu, and HELI powershift transmissions.
Forklift Hydraulic Transmission Assembly — Complete powershift transmission unit including the torque converter, clutch packs, control valve body, and output shaft — ready to install as a single unit. Replacing the entire transmission is the fastest path back to operation when internal damage is widespread (multiple burned clutch packs, scored valve body, contaminated fluid throughout). We supply factory-tested transmission assemblies with correct bell housing pattern, input shaft, and output flange.
Forklift Hydraulic Clutch Assembly — The wet clutch packs inside the transmission that engage forward and reverse gears. Unlike a dry clutch that wears from operator technique, wet clutches wear from contaminated fluid, low pressure, and overheating. Each clutch pack contains alternating steel plates and friction discs compressed by a hydraulic piston. Burnt friction discs are black and warped — they must be replaced as a complete pack. Never replace just the burnt discs — the steel plates have been overheated and lost their flatness. We stock forward and reverse clutch packs with correct plate count and friction material specification.
Forklift Transmission Control Valve — The hydraulic valve body that directs transmission fluid to the correct clutch pack based on the operator’s shift selection. The control valve contains spool valves, check balls, and springs that must move freely in their bores. A stuck spool valve causes: no engagement in one direction (forward works, reverse doesn’t), harsh or delayed shifting, or the transmission staying in gear when the selector is in neutral (dangerous — the forklift creeps). Valve body contamination from clutch material is the most common cause. We stock complete valve body assemblies and individual spool valve kits.
Forklift Charging Pump — Also called the transmission pump or charge pump. The charging pump draws transmission fluid from the sump and pressurizes it for the control valve and torque converter circuit. Transmission pump pressure should be 150-300 PSI at rated engine RPM — low pressure starves the clutch packs and torque converter of fluid, causing slipping and overheating. We stock gear-type and vane-type charging pumps with correct flow rate and drive gear engagement.
Forklift Inching Valve — A hydraulic valve operated by the left brake pedal (inching pedal) that progressively releases the forward clutch pack as the pedal is pressed, allowing precise low-speed maneuvering while keeping the engine RPM high for lifting. A misadjusted or leaking inching valve causes: the forklift to creep forward with the inching pedal fully pressed, or the clutch to disengage too aggressively, causing jerky starts. We stock inching valves with correct pressure modulation curve.
Forklift Hydraulic Transmission Housing — The cast iron housing that contains the clutch packs, shafts, and valve body. The housing includes precision-machined bores for shaft bearings and valve spools. Cracks typically occur at mounting ears from improper bolt torque or from internal pressure spikes when a clutch pack explodes. We stock transmission housings with correct bolt patterns and machined surfaces.
Forklift Torque Converter Housing — The bell housing and converter enclosure that bolts between the engine and transmission. Contains the torque converter and provides the mounting flange for the transmission. Inspection for cracks should focus on the starter mounting boss and the converter inspection cover area — these are the highest stress points.
Forklift Idler Gear — An intermediate gear in the transmission gear train that transfers power between shafts without changing the rotation direction. Idler gears run on needle bearings or bushings — worn bearings cause gear whine and eventually gear tooth damage from misalignment. Replace idler gear bearings whenever the gear shows wear on the tooth flanks.
Forklift Transmission Input Plate — The mounting plate that connects the torque converter turbine to the transmission input shaft. The input plate transfers all engine torque into the transmission and must maintain perfect flatness for proper clutch pack alignment. A warped input plate from overheating causes uneven clutch engagement and rapid wear.
Forklift Other Transmission Parts — Transmission mounts, gaskets, seal kits, bearings, bushings, thrust washers, snap rings, and other internal transmission components not listed in specific subcategories above. Send us your part number or transmission model if you cannot find what you need.
Transmission Fluid: The Lifeblood of Hydraulic Transmissions
Powershift transmissions run on automatic transmission fluid (ATF) or specialized powershift transmission fluid — never engine oil or gear oil. Use the fluid specified by the forklift manufacturer: Dexron III, Toyota Automatic Fluid, or equivalent. Transmission fluid does three jobs simultaneously: it transmits power through the torque converter, it lubricates gears and bearings, and it actuates the clutch packs through hydraulic pressure. Contaminated fluid fails at all three. Change transmission fluid and filter every 1,000 hours (500 hours in severe duty). Check fluid level with the engine running and transmission at operating temperature — checking cold gives a false low reading that leads to overfilling, which causes aeration and pump cavitation.
