The engine oil filter is the most frequently replaced component on any internal combustion engine — it removes carbon particles, metallic wear debris, soot, and oxidized oil sludge from the engine oil as it circulates through the lubrication system. The oil pump draws oil from the oil pan through a pickup screen (coarse strainer) and pushes it through the oil filter (fine filtration, typically 20-40 micron rating) before the oil reaches the crankshaft main bearings, connecting rod bearings, camshaft bearings, piston cooling jets, turbocharger bearings (if equipped), and valve train. The oil filter element is typically pleated paper or synthetic media housed in a spin-on metal canister that threads onto the engine block — a spring-loaded bypass valve inside the filter opens if the filter element becomes clogged, allowing unfiltered oil to circulate rather than starving the engine of oil (a seized engine from oil starvation is worse than engine wear from unfiltered oil). An anti-drainback valve (a rubber flap on the inlet side of the filter) prevents oil from draining out of the filter when the engine is stopped, ensuring the filter is full of oil for immediate oil pressure on the next cold start — a failed anti-drainback valve causes a momentary zero oil pressure condition at every startup that accelerates bearing wear even though the driver never sees the oil pressure light flicker. The oil filter must be replaced at every engine oil change — the filter media has absorbed its maximum contaminant load over the oil change interval, and a new filter with old oil is pointless because the remaining contaminants in the old oil will immediately clog the new filter.

When to Replace Oil Filters:
• At every engine oil change (250-500 hours for forklift diesel engines) → Never change oil without changing the filter. The old filter contains approximately 0.5 liters of old, contaminated oil that will immediately mix with the new oil
• Oil pressure warning light flickers at idle but goes out at higher RPM → The filter is partially clogged and bypassing at low flow rates. Replace the filter and check the oil pump pickup screen for blockage
• Oil leak at the filter-to-base connection → The filter O-ring is damaged (rolled, pinched, or dried out from over-tightening), or the oil filter base is cracked. Replace the filter and inspect the base. Tighten by hand only — never use a filter wrench for final tightening
• Oil filter base or seat is cracked, stripped, or the threaded stud is damaged → The filter cannot be properly installed and tightened. Replace the base or seat immediately — a filter that vibrates loose during operation will pump out all the engine oil within minutes
