This carbon brush (model J230, dimensions 8.8 × 19.2 × 16 mm) is a replacement wear component for the DC motor that drives the hydraulic oil pump on electric forklifts. Carbon brushes are the sliding electrical contact between the stationary wiring and the rotating commutator — they’re designed to wear down over time while maintaining consistent spring pressure against the commutator surface. The J230 is not interchangeable with other brush sizes — a brush that’s even 1mm too short loses spring contact before it’s fully worn, and a brush that’s too wide jams in the holder, overheating the motor. This brush is a direct match for J230-spec brush holders in hydraulic pump motors.

Installation requires removing the brush holder cover and replacing worn brushes in pairs — never replace just one brush on a motor. Uneven brush wear between old and new brushes causes arcing on the commutator that burns the copper segments and shortens motor life. Before installing, check the commutator surface for scoring or burning — if the commutator is damaged, new brushes will wear out in days instead of months. Also check that the brush springs haven’t lost tension from heat fatigue — weak springs cause the brush to bounce off the commutator at high RPM, creating arcing and rapid wear.
