HYDRAULIC CYLINDER WORKING PRINCIPLE: A hydraulic cylinder converts hydraulic fluid pressure into linear mechanical force. In a single acting cylinder, pressurized hydraulic oil enters through a single port on one side of the piston, extending the cylinder rod against the load. The cylinder retracts by gravity or an external load when hydraulic pressure is released — this design is simpler and more economical than double acting cylinders for lifting applications where the weight of the load provides the retraction force. The plunger (ram) cylinder variant uses a large-diameter ram instead of a piston and rod, providing very high force output in a compact diameter — ideal for forklift mast lifting, scissor lifts, dock levelers, and warehouse stacker applications. INSTALLATION AND MAINTENANCE: Mount the cylinder using the clevis or flange mounting points, ensuring proper alignment to prevent side loading on the rod. Connect the hydraulic hose to the single cylinder port using the correct thread adapter and O-ring seal. Bleed air from the system by cycling the cylinder several times without load. Inspect the rod for scoring, pitting, or corrosion every 250 hours — damaged rods will destroy seals and cause external leaks. Check for hydraulic fluid leaks at the rod seal and port fitting at operating pressure. Replace rod seals at the first sign of external leakage to prevent contamination of the hydraulic system.
