GEAR PUMP OPERATION: The forklift hydraulic pump is a positive displacement gear pump — as the engine rotates the drive gear, meshing teeth create suction at the inlet port that draws hydraulic oil from the reservoir. The oil is trapped between the gear teeth and the pump housing and carried to the outlet side where the teeth re-mesh, forcing oil out under pressure. The single-stage design provides a constant flow rate proportional to engine RPM. Flow goes to the hydraulic control valve which directs it to the lift cylinder, tilt cylinder, or auxiliary attachments based on operator input. INSTALLATION: Drain the hydraulic reservoir. Disconnect the pump inlet hose from the reservoir and the pressure outlet hose to the control valve. Unbolt the pump from the PTO adapter or mounting bracket. Install the new pump with a new mounting O-ring or gasket — improper sealing at the intake side causes cavitation and pump failure. Reconnect hoses with new O-rings or sealing washers. Before starting, fill the pump inlet port with clean hydraulic oil to ensure the pump is primed — dry starting destroys gear pumps within seconds.
