GEAR PUMP OPERATING PRINCIPLE: The hydraulic gear pump consists of a matched pair of gears inside a close-tolerance housing — one gear is driven by the engine or PTO shaft, and the other is idler. As the gears rotate and the teeth unmesh on the inlet side, they create a vacuum that draws hydraulic oil into the pump. The oil is carried around the outside of the gears in the tooth spaces and discharged at high pressure on the outlet side where the teeth re-mesh. Gear pumps provide a steady, pulse-free flow of oil proportional to engine speed. INSTALLATION: Drain the hydraulic reservoir, disconnect the pump inlet and outlet hoses, unbolt the pump from its mounting bracket or PTO adapter, install the new pump with a new mounting gasket or O-ring, reconnect hoses with new O-rings and torque fittings to specification, refill hydraulic fluid, prime the pump by filling the inlet port with clean hydraulic oil before starting, start the engine at low idle and verify pump output pressure within specification, check for leaks at all connections.
