The Linde steering orbitrol is a hydraulic orbital steering control unit — the rotary valve and gerotor metering assembly mounted at the base of the steering column that converts the operator steering wheel rotation into proportional hydraulic oil flow to the steering cylinder. When the steering wheel is turned, the orbitrol meters a precise volume of oil to the steering cylinder for each degree of wheel rotation, providing power-assisted steering with a direct mechanical connection between the steering wheel and the steered wheels. A worn orbitrol with internal spool-sleeve leakage causes steering wheel free play, wandering at speed, and increased steering effort — the operator must turn the wheel further before the wheels begin to move.
