Installing the 30HB wheel brake assembly requires removing the wheel and tire, disconnecting the brake hydraulic line from the wheel cylinder, unbolting the old brake assembly from the axle housing flange, and installing the replacement assembly. The brake shoes must be adjusted after installation — the shoe-to-drum clearance should be set so the drum rotates freely with minimal drag when the brake is released, but the shoes engage firmly with the drum within the first portion of brake pedal travel. Too much clearance causes excessive brake pedal travel and delayed braking response; too little clearance causes the brakes to drag continuously, overheating the drum and shoes and accelerating wear. After installation, refill the brake master cylinder reservoir with the correct brake fluid specification (typically DOT 3 or DOT 4 for forklift hydraulic brake systems), bleed the brake system starting from the wheel farthest from the master cylinder, and test braking performance on a level surface before returning the forklift to service. The brake pedal should feel firm and engage within the first 25-50% of travel. A spongy pedal indicates air remaining in the hydraulic system requiring additional bleeding. For 30HB forklifts in heavy-duty environments, the brake assembly should be inspected during scheduled maintenance for lining wear, drum scoring, wheel cylinder leakage, and hydraulic line integrity.
