Forklift Brake Master Cylinder — The heart of the hydraulic brake system. When you press the brake pedal, the master cylinder converts mechanical force into hydraulic pressure that pushes brake fluid through the lines to the wheel cylinders. A failing master cylinder leaks internally — the pedal slowly sinks to the floor while holding pressure, or brake fluid leaks externally around the push rod and drips onto the floor plate. We stock single-circuit and dual-circuit master cylinders for Toyota 7FD/7FG, Komatsu FD, HELI CPCD, and CAT DP series. Always bench-bleed a new master cylinder before installation to remove trapped air from the piston bore.

Forklift Brake Wheel Cylinder — Mounted inside each brake drum, the wheel cylinder receives hydraulic pressure from the master cylinder and pushes the brake shoes outward against the drum. Wheel cylinders fail in two ways: the internal piston seals harden and leak fluid onto the brake shoes (contaminating the friction material and reducing braking force), or the piston seizes in the bore from corrosion (causing that wheel to not brake at all). We stock wheel cylinders with honed bores and EPDM seals rated for DOT 3 and DOT 4 brake fluid.

Forklift Brake Shoes — The friction material that presses against the brake drum to slow the wheel. Brake shoes are a wear item — they must be replaced when the friction lining thickness drops below the manufacturer’s minimum specification (typically 2-3mm). Operating with worn shoes exposes the steel backing plate to the drum, scoring the drum surface and requiring a much more expensive drum replacement. Forklift Brake Drum — The cast iron drum that rotates with the wheel and provides the braking surface. Drums wear from repeated friction contact — the inner diameter increases over time, reducing contact area with the shoes. A worn drum must be replaced when the diameter exceeds the maximum specification stamped on the drum face. Common signs: pulsating pedal (out-of-round drum), reduced braking force, or a ridge at the drum edge from uneven wear. Forklift Brake Assembly — Complete brake shoe and hardware kits including shoes, return springs, hold-down springs, adjuster springs, and clips. Installing a complete assembly replaces all wear components at once — the most efficient approach for scheduled brake maintenance. Forklift Brake Return Spring — Shoe return springs, hold-down springs, and adjuster springs that maintain correct tension inside the drum brake assembly. Always replace brake springs when replacing shoes. Old springs lose tension from repeated heat cycling even if they look visually intact — weak springs cause the new shoes to drag against the drum, wearing them prematurely and reducing fuel efficiency from constant friction drag.

Forklift Brake Cable — Parking brake and handbrake cables that mechanically engage the rear brakes independent of the hydraulic system. A stretched or frayed cable prevents the parking brake from holding the forklift on an incline — a serious safety hazard during loading dock operations. Forklift Brake Hose — Flexible hydraulic brake hoses that connect rigid brake lines to the wheel cylinders. Forklift Vacuum Booster — Brake booster that uses engine vacuum to multiply the force applied to the master cylinder, reducing pedal effort. How to Diagnose Common Brake Problems:

• Pedal slowly sinks to floor while held down → Master cylinder internal leak. Replace master cylinder, do not attempt to repair.
• Forklift pulls to one side during braking → Uneven brake adjustment, contaminated shoes on one side (wheel cylinder leak), or stuck wheel cylinder. Inspect both sides.
• Brake pedal feels spongy or travels too far → Air in hydraulic system (bleed brakes), low brake fluid level (check for leaks), or worn shoes requiring adjustment.
• Grinding noise when braking → Brake shoes worn to metal backing — shoes must be replaced immediately and drum inspected for scoring.
• Parking brake won’t hold on incline → Stretched cable, worn ratchet mechanism on handbrake handle, or contaminated brake shoes on rear axle.
• Hissing sound from pedal area, hard pedal feel → Vacuum booster diaphragm rupture. Replace booster — this is not repairable.

Brake Fluid and Maintenance:

Use DOT 3 or DOT 4 brake fluid as specified by your forklift manufacturer. Never mix DOT 3 and DOT 5 (silicone-based) fluids — they are incompatible and will cause seal swelling and system failure. Brake fluid is hygroscopic — it absorbs moisture from the air over time. Change brake fluid every 2 years or 2,000 hours, whichever comes first. Moisture-contaminated fluid lowers the boiling point (causing brake fade under heavy use) and accelerates internal corrosion of master cylinders, wheel cylinders, and steel brake lines.
